Asessing The Human or The Content? by Putra praSetyo Well, last week experiences in PETA class were amusing enough for me. At least, I felt free from my overwhelmed tasks and assignments. We all did something good and funnier than what we did in other classes (in my opinion). So, here is the storyline. Clapping. The first thing that came up in my mind when my lecterur asked some of my friends to come forward was confusing. What would they be to asked for clapping hands? Was it kinda manner make-up? I was sitting at the back seat when the clapping-event happened. I smiled very weird because my friends clapped like a weirdo (no offense with this statement). Then, the lecturer asked me and my other friends to assess the clapping which mean that I had really gotten to pay attention to the clappers. Time by time for 2 minutes, I observed and analyzed them to decide the rank of the better clapping. Drawing. This was the second activities that I did in the classroom. Eventough I felt being in the kindergarten class, I was enjoying the whole part. Well, this activities reminded me about my elementary school memories when I was really really good in drawing (I guessed so). My drawing was chosen to the best one, even placed on the third position by only one group (at least I felt happy). We did a gallery walk to view my ohers' work and I saw Dasrizal's work wich made me 'nonstop' laughing until the end of the class. I thought it would be my favorite one, but I was just afraid that he would be down because the others also made jokes with that. Sorry, for Dasinki : ) I loved that activities even I was thinking a bit weird when seeing my friends clapping for invisible 'stunning performer'. Well, I just liked the way my lecturer delivering the materials of assessment. So, this was how to deal with 'feeling-subjectivities' in the classroom to assess the students. I had to make a rubric to assess my students. It would be more easier for me to assess objectively and by 'evidence-proof' of my students' work or creation. For your information, I would like to offer you a question. When you assess somebody, what would you be assessed, the human being or the content? Well, I know that most of you must be answered the content. However, do you realized that whenever and wherever you assess somebody you will also assess the person. For example, when you wanted to assess the voice of a beggar with dirty and smelly closthes he puts on his body, what would you be your number one judgement? Appearance, right? Then aftet you thinkg that he is not good enough to be the one to sing, you will reduce his score because of your judgement. I realized that one thing that we have yo rememebr in assesing somebody. No more subjectivities! You have to be independently objective wirh the assessment tolls you have or make. Weel, I think this proverb will define everything for the assessment in th class, DON'T JUDGE A BOOK FROM ITS COVER. So, we have to make judgement from their real capabilities, not our perspective. That is how black sees it!
