Week 1 - Instance Teaching Math with Humour

Mathematics becomes a frightening specter for most students. In our opinion It is well-known as a very difficult and complicated subject. There is also another reason why mathematics frightens the students, it is because most math teachers are labeled as “killers” because they are too rigid in teaching, fearful and tend to make their students to memorize formulas. This is confirmed by  Ir. Helena Margaretha, the headmaster at a mathematics department.  But do you know that this kind of situation can be resolved?
Fear in learning math can be overcome by a humorous teacher. Humorous teacher that the writer means here is a teacher who can change the atmosphere of the classroom, so that the subject can be delivered in a fun and more relaxing way. When students are relaxed and enjoying the atmosphere of the classroom, teachers can catch the students’ attention to start learning the subject. by wina senjaya (2009) Humor is also a way to increase students’ enthusiasm for learning when it has come down or make the students to focus on the material being taught, humor can also increase the teachers' relationships with students. So that the label of a “killer” teacher can be replaced as a favorite teacher. Well, from the statements above we can conclude that humorous teacher can be one of the approaching strategies in learning mathematics.
As the English proverb says "nobody’s perfect", it also works as well as a humorous teacher. Although the humorous teacher can break the ice of a tense situation in thinking hard on a math problem,  apparently there are some weaknesses. The excessive humorous style of a  teacher and too much jokes in learning process  may cause the subject will not be delivered clearly.
Therefore, we as the future teachers would be better to create a fun learning, especially mathematics. One of them is being  a humorous teacher who can deliver the subject well and clearly. The real examples of fun and humorous teachers can be found at Sampoerna School of Education. The mathematics teachers at SSE are very interesting and not bored, even if the material which is taught is as hard as calculus, geometry,or transformation geometry. The teachers always teach well even greatly and do not forget to insert their style of humor in teaching, so the subject can understand it and keep it fun. Through humor, instructor can break the ice to make the learning process feels interesting. Well what if you become a teacher later? What is your argument about learning math with a humorous teacher?

  1. In my school later, I've some humorous teacher.. May be that's one of solution to get attention from students and it's more interest for student.
    when we fill bored and suddenly our teacher give humor I think we are not going to sleep aren't it? (for you, sleepyhead) hehehe

I'm very agree with this article.. very interesting.. humorous teacher.. that's very useful to make an enjoy atmosphere.. when we make enjoy the situation for the lesson then we hope students will have understanding easier. I remember when my teacher said " you don't need to like your teacher you only need to like the lesson" but here in SSE we must to be a teacher whom are liked by students.

    I agree with this issue.
    Mathematics like a monster for anyone who dislike math and humorous teacher can make the situation is better with their humor.
    But I think that misconceptions about mathematics (a frightening specter, very difficult and killer teacher) can't be done with humorous teacher only, even it helps to make student more understand and break cold situation.

  4. yes, its a good idea I think this article, this is one way that teachers can make students enjoy learning mathematics. Because if the teacher is liked by the students, so in difficult lessons their will feel easy to understand that lessons. I was one of the students who ever had a math teacher humorous, and has made me more loving Mathematics. So, we can apply this method to make students enjoy learning math :). Thanks

    As a teacher should be make their students comfortable. Especially for mathematics teacher, as we know that some students hate mathematic. I think, humorous will make students feel more comfortable.

  7. I think that’s good idea. All Indonesian mathematics teachers can applied this idea when they teach in the class. But some of teacher cannot be humorous teachers, so how are the solutions for this situation?

  8. Good idea. I hope when I become a teacher later I can change student’s mind if Mathematics is not difficult course. I think the students if learn math with a humorous teacher can be like with the major. However, I think all of the major can be interesting depend on how the teacher teach.

    A great issue I think. I really agree that a humorous teacher can overcome student's fear of Math.I really like a humorous teacher. Based on this issue is explained that a humorous teacher have to can increase students’ enthusiasm for learning when it has come down,etc. So, a humorous teacher not only funny I think, but a humorous teacher have to know the psychology the students I think. So, let's learning and preparing about it because we are the new generation of teacher. :D

  11. The first time I did it because mandatory. However, when I was doing it, I really enjoy and fun. So, not mandatory again but I'm willing now.
    There is really fun and useful for me to develop insight, knowledge, and writing I think.

    The article is actually inspired from my mathematic teacher when I was in senior high school.
    And I think this could be one of our alternative future teachers of mathematics to insert humor. So that our students more interest in matmematics

  13. Putra...I'm agree with dayah opinion.. In the first time is because of mandatory.
    But actually a lot of benefits that may not be directly we can. I think it also could attract higher-level thinking through our reflections, comments, rebuttal, etc. we have created. Especially when my writing gets comments from other people, I feel happy because I appreciated the post's comments either agree or disagree. I also learned to accept criticism and suggestions from others.

    My experience about humorous math teacher I got in 12th grade. It was soooooooooo great hahha, because I am a humorous person, so I am so happy if I have that kind of teacher, math esspecially.

    but i wanna say that an humorous teacher doesn't 100% persuade students to love the subject. it only makes students like the teacher.
    Well, i had a reading the book "Membumikan Matematika" (it is available in our library). the thing which makes people get afraid with this subject because it is too abstract, teachers are not able to deliver it well.
    so, i think humorous teacher is not really necessary to have, as long as every teacher is able to make a good attitude toward the math it self.

    Become a humorous teacher is one of characteristics for favorite teacher.
    Sometimes students need a joke in the middle of studied, especially mathematic's lesson.
    But, the teacher should be able to control condition of the class :)

  17. what a great issue, based on my experience I never have a humorous teacher mathematics except in SSE :D . Whereas students in senior high school have a big sense humor, as long as teacher can control class condition and do not make it noisy , that's can be a good ways to teach math with humor . :D
    one of characteristics of effective teacher is friendly..

  19. WOOOOW.. Good Idea to be a humorous teacher in mathematics.. But I can not make a homorous,,, just make them comfort with me. My sister said that sometimes I make her laugh when we learn so mathematics not fear.. But I can not make a jokes just a way to provide information about the math is different, so maybe he/she was laughing ..

  22. I agree this article. But on the other stuff, I found that very humorous teacher can lead students dissolved in a joke given that teacher so that students can not understand the material the teacher. Therefore, as a teacher can understand the state of their students because the teachers understand the needs and circumstances students can make students more comfortable in following the math.

    A humorist teacher, emmm? actually I still get confused 'bout humorist teacher. In my mind, it's just like fun teacher with a bunch of creative and interesting way in teaching. Any perception is okay, but the important one is not to make a teaching to be a just joking time.
    What an actual writing! That's great of first group ^^V

  27. emm,when i and our group discussion, we confused what a topic for issue.. but we choosed about teacher math with humorous. i known we have different think it is good for find the conclusion and good perception.., but don't forget together we can make a difference
