How Effective Microteaching Practice for Teaching in the Real Situation?

“Microteaching is defined as a system of controlled practice that makes it possible to concentrate on specified teaching behavior and to practice teaching under controlled conditions.” (D.W. Allen &A.W.Eve, 1968)
Sampoerna School of Education, one of the educational institution which is trying to create the next generation of teachers who are able to teach in bilingual and ICT oriented. The students have been training to implement the entire course in teaching and learning in the future. Since the first semester we have been taught by the lecturer to train ourselves how to teach in the classroom by microteaching.
As mentioned above the definition of microteaching, we would like to emphasis the sentence ‘practice teaching under controlled condition.’ The students of Sampoerna School of Education have many times of experiences in microteaching. We would like to share our point of view about it. There are two main cores in teaching and learning that delivering the materials and classroom management. Those two aspects are very important. Let we see if we are doing microteaching and the real teaching experiences.
Regarding to our experiences and reflection, in microteaching the priority is how we can deliver the materials. We do not really pay attention how we manage the studentsa.k.a our friends because all of them are under controlled. They have been told to be a ‘good’ students in our microteaching practice. Can you imagine how we teach other students (in the real classroom) who never met with us?
We have been thinking how to make microteaching more effective and more real. We can teach our English Department students about mathematics. We think it will be more challenging, but still we can measure their understanding about the materials that we deliver. However in that case the students are still our friends, so it looks like they know us then they will obey us. It means the classroom management is under controlled.
The fact microteaching is one of the important methods for the teacher candidates in practicing teaching. We can implement the process below to improve the teacher candidate’s skill.
1.       Plan
This is the beginning step and the most important one for the teacher candidates who want to do microteaching. Usually when we want to do microteaching we will make lesson plan for one session of class. Lesson plan is essential to achieve the goals in teaching and learning.
2.       Teach
After we make the plan (lesson plan) then we can practice how we teach the students (in microteaching the time and the pupils are reduced). In this process we try to implement our plan. It will give us a chance of confidence in speaking in front of the class and how to act and react in front of the class.

3.       Feedback
The last process is feedback. This step will let us know our weakness from microteaching practice. It will also help us to make our next teaching practice improve.

Those three steps above will improve our teaching skills if we do it more and more. After we get feedback, we can re-start the process Ketiga proses re-planning => re-teachinng => re-feedback.
In brief, we have some effectiveness about microteaching, it will train our teaching skills in front of the class, practicing to make the lesson plan, and makes ourselves more confidence. And there is also some ineffectiveness in microteaching from our point of view, in microteaching we can collaborate together and making the scenario, but in the real situation in the classroom we are not sure makinga bound with the students at the very first time. And the lesson plan which have we made could be implement very well but it could be not.
As we know being a teacher is not really easy, it takes time and experiences to make us to be an effective teacher in teaching in the classroom. However, how lucky of us the students of Sampoerna School of Education who have a lot of preparation to be the next generation of teachers.
How about your opinion?

  2. Talk about micro-teaching...
I am a nervous person if I must speak in front of class. So I think that micro-teaching is one of solutions how can make my nervous more abating.
But always same with the issues, we don't know how about the real class.

  4. I think "the new generation of teachers" should be replaced by "the new generation of educators", I refer on Bu Rosa's statement :D

Anyway, I also agree with you guys, which micro teaching is one of the best way to practice, but maybe we have to make agreement with our "students", they have to be real students and don't distract us like they distract us in daily course, so i'll be more effective. Do you get my point? What about your opinion? :D

right, I still be nervous when do micro-teaching whereas the students are my friends and sometimes they have to comment or assess my perform, it made me be more nervous but I think that is the best way to train our mental to perform in front of class.

  7. I think we urgently need to train our micro teaching in teaching, because we often do the research we can find out the shortcomings of our teaching. thus we can teach well.
