Assessment (as/of/for) Learning

As we know that assessment is used to measure our students’ understanding. Most of teachers assess them in the end of the lessons. Let’s think for a while, what about during the learning process? Is it needed? We can distinguish the assessment into three parts; assessment of learning, assessment for learning, and assessment as learning. Now, the question is “should in every teaching and learning process using those three parts?”
“Assessment of learning” and “assessment for learning” is shown for teacher’s assessment, while “assessment as learning” is shown for students’ assessment. If we see from both of them, there’s no correlation because one is for teacher assessment, and the rest is for students. Whereas, if we look when the assessment itself occurs, “assessment of learning” occurs in the end of the lesson which purposes to design the next learning. “Assessment as learning” is used by the students on going learning process. Besides, “assessment for learning” is the materials for reflecting and reviewing to the learning that has been occurred. Three of them are interdependent in teaching and learning process.
Stiggins (2007) said that “assessment of learning” is important in learning process, but he tended to push the teachers to focus on “assessment for learning” because this way can support during the learning process. By focusing to formative assessment, it will increase students’ achievement. Based on the article, it has been mentioned that most of teachers prefer to use summative assessments because formative assessment needs long time to be done, and they have to pay attention the improvement of all students, so they only use summative assessment.
In Indonesia, we know that in the end of semester the students will have summative assessment final examination (UAS) and for graduating, they will have final examination (UN). The students have to deal with the multiple choices questions and must achieve the standard score that has been given by the government. Actually, that’s good to review and evaluate the students in the end of learning process, but we also have to assess the process in learning using formative assessment. If we focus more on summative assessment, it just make the teachers only focus to examination, then the teachers don’t focus on formative assessment.
Assessment for learning, assessment as learning, and assessment of learning which is the part of summative assessment and formative assessment is very important in teaching and learning process. So, if we just focus to one of them, will we make a good assessment? Let’s discuss.

  1. Iam agree that teacher should care about students learning process to assess them. Assessment is not just about score, right?
“Assessment of learning and assessment for learning is shown for teacher’s assessment"
I think assessment for learning is not only teacher assessment but also student self assessment
I prefer to use all assessment (as, of dan for learning), each of them has their own function.

  4. agree with Nopi, that is have correlation or not, anybody can explain?

Nice issue, and I think, a good teacher should provide an assessment not only in the end of learning ( final or formative)using symbol or number, but during the process of learning students also need assessment, example using feedback or giving motivation for students.

  6. Mul said, yes, all of the assessment any relation because the teacher can make students' understanding better in the next meeting if they use assessment for learning that continuous and in the assessment of learning the teacher can make new strategies to gives assessment for the students. then, the teacher and students together did assessment in the class of process teaching and learning.

for Dayah, I based on my knowledgeable that formative assessment consist of assessment for learning and assessment as learning while sumative assessment consist of assessment of learning. in other countries like Stiggins (2007) said the teacher has to more focus in formative assessment because it more influence to students' achievement. we know that assessment as learning very important in the process teaching and learning.

  9. I agree with Asih's comment, we have to focus when do assessment. as an educator we have to make formative assessment not only summative but summative still important to know how deep students' understanding the lesson, let's compare both of them and don't be lazy as a good educator, :)

  11. good issue, guys.
and i agree with siluth's opinion. we have to combine all of those type of assessment.
beside assess students' understanding and we represent it into score, we have to make it as our reflection.

  12. Yeah..Good question wirman..
UAN is one of the summative assessment. But I think the government uses this system because it will be easier to know how successful the students in studying for 6 years for elementary school and 3 years secondary school?
Imagine, how do we know the learning outcomes / measures all students in Indonesia if the government frees the way the assessment of graduation?
    Wow, must be extraordinarily complex.
Well, although it UAN much downside, but besides that there is also a positive side.
If that UAN is not appropriate to assess or determine graduation, such as whether the assessment that you think appropriate? let's discuss

  13. hmmmmm.
your question is difficult to answer wirman.
but i agree with you sofi.Indonesian government use summative assessment because it will be more easy to correct.
i can not imagine if government uses formative test.
i think it will take a long time to correct.

actually i do not with UAN's system in Indonesia.
In my opinion it can not measure students understanding.
