Types of Special Knowledge for Teacher

Related to the previous material about Effective Teacher, one of characteristic which teachers should have is mastering special knowledge because we cannot become a teacher if we do not have it.  What kind of special knowledge that teachers should have?
             The first, the teachers should have “knowledge of content”. It is the main knowledge for us to teach the content of the subject to our students, so they will learn and get the right information or concept from us to be applied in their life. If we do not master the content, we can give them wrong information or concept unconsciously, it will make them confuse and misconception. If our students misconception about the concept, it will bring them to the wrong way.
They will get hard to learn the continuance of another concept in the next chapter or topic. For example, we will teach them about limit. If we don’t master the concept of limit, so we just give them the patterns without don’t know the step by step how to get those patterns. We will tend to direct them to use this pattern for this kind of problem, those patterns for that kind of problem, this one for this, etc. However, when they face another problem, they will get confuse to solve because they don’t know the main concept of the limit. So, they only can solve the problems based on patterns which have given.
           The second, we have to master “pedagogical content knowledge.” It is the knowledge for presenting our content or topic in the appropriate ways which understandable. So many teachers present their material in conventional way. They only use lecturing to teach their students. We know that sometimes it is really needed to do when we have to deliver the difficult concept. However, do not always use the same methods in our classroom, the students will interested to learn if we use the various methods. We can use students’ presentation, group discussions, etc. So it requires the teachers to be very creative to present their material or topic.
         The third, as an effective teacher we have to have “general pedagogical knowledge,” such as instructional strategies, how to manage our classroom, how to deal about the rules or agreement with our students, etc. So many teachers difficult to manage their class, it is because they don’t master this knowledge. Many teachers in Indonesia that background are non-education, so they did not learn how to be a teacher but they are becoming a teacher. For example is elementary teachers in Indonesia, most of them are non-educational or non-PGSD graduate, but they tech so many subjects. It’s related with “knowledge of content”, they don’t master the content and also the general pedagogical about being a teacher.
        The last is “knowledge of learners and learning.” It’s about how to understand our students’ learn, their needs, their motivations, etc. It requires our metacognitive ability, as a teachers we know that our students have different characteristics in learning; visual learner, audio learner, and kinaesthetic learner. We have to know how to teach the material with the methods that cover all students. It requires our higher order thinking to present our material to them, so it’s really related to the “pedagogical content knowledge”.
         In short, as an effective teacher we have to master four kinds of knowledge. We cannot only master some of them because all of them are interdependent. If we only master the knowledge of content only, we will get difficulty to manage our class, present our topics appropriately and understandable, etc. If we only master the general pedagogical knowledge without knowledge of content, we can give a wrong concept unconsciously to them. So, let’s learn to be an educator teacher that educates our students, not only being a teacher who teaches the students without understanding. Believe in ourselves, and make a change for a brighter future.

  1. ^^ that's the theory .. and It looks a bit difficult to be a teacher .. I think we can't to be a great teacher in a day .. I always believe that everything need process to be great.. And now we are going through one of many process.. hwaitiingg ^^

  2. Novi, my nice leader, who's saying that we can't... I am certain, during we get our best effort and keep focusing to our goals (being a great teacher I mean, nothing impossible right?

    For this essay, Wooowww... that's quite theoretical, and we need to know it. Very good.
    I like this statement "let’s learn to be an educator teacher that educates our students, not only being a teacher who teaches the students without understanding" I do agree.Educating makes the students not only educated but also understand. ^^

  6. Its a great issue.
    As a teacher candidate i know its not easy.
    Its not like do your job and get your money.
    But become a teacher is a big deal to take the responsibility to make students develop their knowledge.
    I think, become a teacher that still learn is important too.

  7. "We are the next generation of teacher". yeah, almost every day I hear that. But, if I look at SSE, not all of student in here have talent, ability to be an effective teacher. You can look at me for example. So, hey writers... What do you think, Can I be an effective teacher whereas I have not all of four kinds of knowledge?

    If I can, please give me solution.. Coz In my mind, I can't get this four knowledge, but I just can try..

    Imam: for me, personally, effective can be defined individually. For example, you and i have different characteristic (you are more quite, and i am so talkative) everyone is unique, right?
    and here, you can't judge that i-who is talkative-can be an effective teacher. it all depends on you how to prepare and manage the lesson, for me.... you're such a great candidate of teacher.

  10. well, for the issue... i don't care whether it is theoretically or not, but the meaning of it.
    That what i am going to discuss here...we all always think that we here are prepared to be a good--effective--teacher. But i watch that many universities--beside SSE--is going under to study teaching well. Now, if all universities study the same--about teaching effectiveness--what will we show as an SSE student?

    we all have the different characteristic, depending on how we utilize what we have
    in junior high school I had a teacher who has not much different characteristics like Imam but
    he can make us understand what it conveys.

    das, yes maybe all universities learn the same things about effective teacher like us. I think is not that good? all teachers candidate are prepared to become an effective teacher in the classroom. It is an extraordinary thing that we all can hold it well. Not only SSE can make a different.

  12. waw, it is very theoretically, but is great issue. to become a teacher is not eassy, we should study hard like that issue may be it is a litle part theory we should know.. but not only we should know the theory, i thik the important is we should know how to use the theory. alright?

Based on the module PETA that I've read, knowledge of content, pedagogical content knowledge, general pedagogical knowledge, and knowledge of learners and learning included to "Teacher Professional Knowledge". However, in this issue that four kinds og knowledge included to "Special Knowledge". Professional knowledge and special knowledge is the same meaning?

  17. Great issue. that was theoretical which has not only to learn but also to applied in the real situation when we become a teacher latter. in fact, to be a next generation of teacher is not easy. Keep spirit, to be better than now everything need a process. :)

  18. Good issue, Indonesia really need teacher who have 4 specials knowledge such as above and we are prepared for it.
    Although it is really theoretical but it was really needed :D

    Actually, be a teacher isn't easy. But the master four kinds of knowledge will help the new generation of teacher can be a good teacher.

    We know that be a teacher is more challenging. So, we must be a good teacher.
