7th e-reflection of Dasrizal

Is This a Reflection (7)?
Written by Dasrizal

PETA class is getting more interesting. This week we discussed a new topic. Instead or discussing how to teach, how to improve students’ understanding using MI and BT, and how to make a lesson plan, this week we discussed about assessing students using rubric.

Rubric is a way to assess students’ creation by using several categories so that teachers have big consideration to score students. In the rubric itself, teachers can’t include (a) subjective(s) point of view of the students’ creation. The rubrics should cover all the point of view and it is written clearly. For instance (from what we got in the class), to assess a picture creation, the rubric should be clear if the background will be assessed or not. The rubric may not say that ‘the picture is neat’ since everyone has different definition about the term ‘neat’. Hence, teachers ought to really consider all the things may occur, so that there is no misunderstanding toward the rubric.

Above is what I’ve got in the classroom. Now is the reflection….

Well, I actually do agree with the rubric as a ‘tool’ to assess students’ creation. When I was in high school, students used to get A or B in Bahasa Indonesia lesson when wrote an essay. However, we asked to ourselves how we could get that score. We never knew. It was only the teachers’ subjectivity. Hence, when I am becoming a teacher, I have to be ready to create rubric to assess students in Math lesson. Honestly, I keep being curious what kind of rubric can be used in Math class (does anybody have suggestions and examples?).

However, my friends and I are still questioning if rubric is really an objective tool to assess students’ understanding. Let’s see! When we’re going to place a student to be in score 4, 3, 2, or 1, I am sure that we use our subjectivity. So, what the rubric is for?

All in all, I do recognize that rubric is ONLY a ‘tool’ to formalize the score (for archiving). I do believe that students’ creation isn’t able to be assessed using rubrics. Students have extraordinary ideas to create. When I am becoming a teacher I promise to make rubric as formalization. I don’t want to limit students to improve their creativity. Students are awesome!
