The strengths and
weaknesses of Rubrics
Nowadays, we
frequently heard about the word 'rubric' in every teaching and learning
activities. Though do we ever define the definition of rubric itself and also
its strengths with weaknesses? Here, we will share one another about rubric.
Rubrics is an authentic assessment tool used to measure
students’ work. Rubric must be given to the students before they start to do
the task at least before they submit the task. So, that is why the rubric must
be adopted from the students' need and also about what content asessed. Most
people argue that rubric has some strengths which could be measured the
students' work, such as:
·
Rubrics improve student performance by
clearly showing the student how their work will be evaluated and what is
expected.
·
Rubrics help students become better judges
of the quality of their own work.
·
Rubrics
allow assessment to be more objective and consistent.
·
Rubrics
force the teacher to clarify his/her criteria in specific terms.
·
Rubrics
reduce the amount of time teachers spend evaluating student work.
·
Rubrics
promote student awareness about the criteria to use in assessing peer
performance.
·
Rubrics
provide useful feedback to the teacher regarding the effectiveness of the
instruction.
·
Rubrics
provide students with more informative feedback about their strengths and areas
in need of improvement.
·
Rubrics
accommodate heterogeneous classes by offering a range of quality levels.
·
Rubrics are easy to use and easy to explain
However, we also have to
remember about its weaknesses which could make the assessment invalid, such as:
-
Make the students lazier to do the task
perfectly, because they assumpt to have a good remark they only have to do what
the rubric asked.
-
Subjectivity of teachers' perspective.
-
Unable to use it in multiple choice problem.
-
For peer assessment, sometimes the close-friend
subjectivity happen.
We think that every assessment
tool have its own strengths and weaknesses so, we should minimize the
weaknesses to get the best result.

ReplyDeleteI disagree that rubric can make students become lazy because it is depend of the quality that rubric. I think every students want to get the high score of rubric so they are try to do the best and do the task perfectly.
Mul said, Nice, I like it. the strengths and weakness from a rubric, but the strengths are more than the weakness. so we need the rubric for the assessment.
ReplyDeleteGreat issue.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing about the strengths and weakness of rubric.
i agree with you that rubric is unable to use in multiple choice problem.
But in my opinion, rubric very useful for teachers. It will be helpful to assess.
Nice issue..
ReplyDeleteI agree that the rubrics can be use in the multiple choice test, therefore when i was senior high school i never assess with rubrics. it is depend on the teacher, what the teacher assess.
But, we now we can combine. That the assessment not only paper and pencil test but also performance test. in my opinion that performance test has less attention or be dis ignore with math teacher in common school.
Nice Issue guys.. :) the strengths and weakness using rubric. I think as the teacher candidate rubric is very useful when assess the student's work if we make a good rubric we can avoid the weakness of the rubric above. Thanks
ReplyDeleteNice..
ReplyDeletebut how rubric can make subjectivity of teacher perspective? I think educator make a rubric to ignore it. is my understanding wrong?
